Building the Yocto #5 – Soldering the Noise Section

I have now finished building the noise section of the Yocto. Pretty straight forward to assemble, but I hade big problems calibrating the AC RMS output to 130mV as instructed in the build guide. After searching the E-Licktronick forum for help I tried some suggestions of switching some resistors to other values but to no avail. I found some references to the Roland TR-808 Service Manual (page 15, Mainboard change 5) which had a suggested change for the noise section. I found the manual but I was not really sure how to implement it, I was a bit confused by the 22pF cap. Then I found the Masuto Yocto 808 Building Tips which guided me in the right direction. After implementing this it was possible to calibrate it properly (at least as far as I can tell, perhaps my multimeter is not that good).

  1. People usually get stuck in the noise section, right at the beginning of the project! I would say, build it like i did and then go on with the build, you can always fine tune it later (i made some adjustments using the trimmers to have the right snare sound after finishing it).
    Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the guide! I’ll keep pushing on and hopefully I’ll get there eventually 🙂

      1. Thanks but.. My guide is really a small thing compared to the wealth of info found in the Yocto forum.. The Yocto is the most satisfying machine you can ever build!

I’ve been there also. But it’s nice to have information in a single location without having to plow through a forum discussion of it’s not necessary.
